Seven Shows on TV Right Now to Feed Your Wanderlust

If, like me, you’re currently in between trips, here are some shows on tv right now that can help you make it until you’re next adventure.

Indian Summers

PBS, Sundays at 9PM EST/8 PM CST

It’s being hailed as the new Downtown Abbey, a gorgeous simpering melodrama with the sheen on PBS’s cultural cache and a cast with serious chops.  The focus is on the twilight of the British Empire and the rise of Indian nationalism.

How to Get Away with Murder

ABC, Thursdays at 10PM EST/9 CST

Yes, Viola Davis won the Emmy for her depiction of Annalise Keating.  Yes, this is a hot show everyone is always talking about.  But I love it for the respect it gives it’s West Philly setting.  Philly is on the tv a lot (It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia, The Goldbergs), but West Philadelphia is a singularly beautiful neighborhood that more people should get to know.

The Bastard Executioner

FX, Tuesdays at 10PM EST/9 CST

To be honest, this show does not make me want to go to 14th century Wales.  It’s a dark and violent world.  But it absolutely makes me want to visit modern Wales and roam around the lush countryside.

The Last Man on Earth

FOX, Sundays at 9:30 EST/8:30 CST

American road trips with no traffic?  No cops?  No speeding tickets?  How much fun would that be?  Phil Miller gets to see the country the way no one can:  White House sleepovers, museum trips with Van Gogh paintings as souvenirs, and multiple tequila pools.

Public Morals

TNT, Tuesdays at 10 EST/9 CST

Confession:  If a tv show is set in NYC or LA, I get super bored.  There’s only like a billion other places a show could be set.  So a show has to be really good for me to give it a chance if it’s set in either locales.  And it helps if it shows a different version of the city than we always see.  This show is New York City in the sixties.  But it’s not just another Mad Men ripoff.  Instead its a gritty Hell’s Kitchen come to life.

Homeland

SHO, Sundays at 9 EST/8 CST

Set at times in Washington, D.C., Iran, Israel, Kabul, Islamabad, and Caracas, this show’s plot stretches across continents.  The show is Showtime’s highest rated show to date because the plot, cast, and writing are superb.  For the traveler who dreams of seeing even the world’s most dangerous places, it’s got a lot more to offer.

You’re the Worst

FX, Wednesdays at 10:30 EST/9:30 CST

See my earlier commentary on how I feel about the typical New York or LA show.  This show not only makes LA seem like an interesting setting, but it actually makes me want to get on a plane and visit.  It’s every LA cliché imaginable, but this time they’re fresh.  The story of a publicist and a writer falling in love in Los Angeles should be epically boring, but somehow this is so well done it’s my favorite show on tv right now.  And it’s version of LA actually looks like a fun place to be.
